Who we are…
Phoenix Wind Band is a community-focused concert band committed to musical enjoyment and excellence. While we rehearse and perform for the love of playing, we also challenge ourselves to continually raise our standard and expand our repertoire.
Our members come from a wide range of backgrounds — from students to retirees — united by a shared passion for music and ensemble performance.
We present two major concerts each year, in spring and at Christmas, along with additional performances throughout the year, including outdoor summer bandstand appearances. Seasonal favourites such as Christmas carols are also a regular part of our programme.
Our repertoire is as diverse as our membership — from musicals, pop, and jazz standards to original works for symphonic wind band by composers such as Gustav Holst, Philip Sparke, Martin Ellerby, and Steven Reineke.
Rehearsals are at Christ Church C of E VC Junior School, Pendennis Road, Downend on Mondays from 7:30pm to 9:00pm.
Contact us if you are interested in joining us one week.
Our Musical Director…
Richard Jones has been the Musical Director of the Phoenix Wind Band since its formation in 2014. Richard’s background is as a clarinet player, and has played in a wide range of orchestras, wind bands and chamber groups in the local area.
Richard’s interest in conducting has developed over several years, and has been deepened through attending conducting courses. He is willing to tackle complicated pieces and enthusiastically encourages all band members to develop beyond their current standard. His focus has been on developing a cohesive sound for the band, including improving ensemble work to create as good a performance as possible.
When not playing clarinet or conducting, Richard is a chartered engineer. He also enjoys hiking and travelling.
