Spring Concert 2017

Our spring concert this year was our first visit to Chipping Sodbury and was a complete sell out!  There were many highlights, but one particularly entertaining performance was of Bass in the Ballroom featuring our tuba player Alan Edden-Jones which you can now find on our videos page.

Thank you to everyone who came and supported us and also to the children from Silverhill School who played in the foyer beforehand.  We are already planning on returning here next year - so watch this space!

This year's spring concert took place on 30th April 2016 at Downend Baptist Church.  This was the first time we performed at this fabulous venue and we sold out!
The programme included A Malvern Suite by Philip Sparke, Spitfire Prelude by William Walton, an arrangement of Amazing Grace and a selection from the musical The Lion King.

We were joined by Winterbourne Winds, the latest addition to the Avon Wind Band Association, who played a variety of pieces which were enjoyed by all.

Christmas Concert 2015

This year's Christmas concert was held at Winterboune Community Centre in South Gloucestershire.  It was a very a very popular evening and very nearly sold out.  It featured a wide range of musical styles and for the first time included the guest singer Tom Lathham.

Thank you to everyone who made it such a success, particularly to the band who put in all the practice!

Open Rehearsal - 2015

On Monday 21st September 35 people attended our open evening, making it our biggest ever Monday practice!  During the evening we played five different works for Wind Band including Vaughan Williams' Sea Songs and Berliner Luft.  We also looked at some more light-hearted pieces from Disney and Karl Jenkins' Palladio.  Afterwards we received lots of positive feedback, especially regarding the band's baking abilities!

Thank you to everyone who made the evening such a success, and particularly the staff at Emerson's Green Library for all their help organising the event.  We look forward to seeing you again next year.

Summer 2015

21st June: 'C' in the Park, King George V Playing Fields, Downend
27th June: Armed Forces Day, Page Park, Staple Hill

This summer we played at two outdoor events within a week!  The first was a local event organised by a group of local churches and the second was South Gloucestershire's Armed Forces Day.  We were lucky to have good weather for both events, although it was a little windy at times!

Joint concert with The University of Minnesota Big Band

In May we took part in a joint concert with the University of Minessota, Morris Big Band.  The first half of the concert featured the Phoenix Wind Band playing concert band repertoire written on both sides of the Atlantic while the second half featured the Big Band playing some traditional and modern Jazz standards.  Both bands were very well received and the evening even finished with a standing ovation and encore!

Programme included: An English Folk Song Suite by Vaughan Williams and The Suite of Old American Dances by Robert Russell-Bennett.

Joint concert with the  Avon Wind Band Association (AWBA)
Also in May, we played to a sell out hall as part of the 2015 AWBA joint concert.  The evening featured all four bands associated with the charity, including the new beginners group, playing pieces that had been learnt in the last few months.  We showcased a number of different styles of music including jazz with Benny Goodman: The King of Swing and music from the shows including Oklahoma! by Rogers and Hammerstein.

Everyone had a very enjoyable evening and there was distinct progress since last year's concert.  We are already looking forward to next year's event!
